Trondenes Historical Centre

Trondenes Historiske Senter is located 3 km outside the center of Harstad in idyllic and historic surroundings. Our museum provides an insight into the history of the Harstad region from our distant past up to the 1950s. The exhibition is chronological and self-explanatory. On the first floor, we have the main focus on the Viking Age and the Middle Ages, our proud history. But we also tell about our painful history on Trondenes, with the peninsula's traces after the Second World War and a Soviet prisoner of war camp.

Trondenes Middelaldergård is built in connection with the historical exhibition inside the museum. This is a reconstructed farm from approx. year 1200 based on Trondene's history as it is known through archaeological excavations and written sources. The farm complex is now complete with a barn, a forge and a stave church. During the summer, the farm is characterized by wildlife and fields.

We also recommend a walk in the cultural landscape at Trondenes, past boathouses, burial mounds and the 2,000-year-old farm mound. But recent history - the bad history - has also left its mark, with German camps, Russian prison camps and Finnmarksbyen (reconstruction camp from the post-war period).
